Data Communications

The MEDS truck system utilizes fast and efficient ways to transfer data to and from the trucks.

802.11b WI-FI Wireless LAN – Short range coverage, high speed, file transfers
  • In the morning it is used for transmitting manifests (routes) to the trucks in the parking lot.
  • In the evening it is used for transmitting delivery data from the trucks in the parking lot.
Wide Area Networks (WAN) – Wide range coverage, Real-Time Communications Networks include:
  • Cellular Phone System Networks (Cingular/AT&T Wireless, Verizon, T-Mobile, SPRINT/Nextel)
  • Satellite Networks
  • UHF, 800 MHz (Private Radio Systems)

If you want to know "Where are my trucks RIGHT NOW?", you want the MEDS Real-Time Communications system utilizing Wide Area Networks, plus the AVL Tracker Program which shows the latest truck locations on a map in the office.

Coverage is the Key

Real-time communications are available through the cellular companies listed above using technology with names like GSM/GPRS or CDMA. In areas without cellular coverage, which are usually small towns and rural areas, satellite technology might be the only way to get real-time communication capabilities.

Cellular technology has certain advantages over satellite. It typically has faster transmission speeds, and is less expensive. However, coverage is the key. In certain areas, the cellular service providers may not have adequate coverage for your entire delivery area. We can work with you and your service providers to help determine whether cellular will meet your needs.

Satellite technology, though slower and more expensive than cellular, can have an advantage when it comes to coverage of an area. Satellite providers typically use either geostationary satellites or low earth orbit (LEO) satellites to provide service. We are working with both types of providers to obtain the best possible coverage for your company.

Depending on your needs, we can also help combine both technologies. Your main office may use cellular, while a more remote branch could benefit from satellite communications. We will help you to determine the best solution.

Private Radio Systems are usually used for voice transmissions (walkie–talkie) rather than for data. Users include companies that might already have the towers and other infrastructure in place, but it is rather expensive to build one from scratch. You might be able to rent time on one of these networks from a provider that has a network in place and supplies coverage in your area.
